The Women Divers of Shima
I am so very grateful for the gift of travel. I love exploring the nooks and crannies of the world, soaking in the amazing landscapes our planet offers. Everywhere I go, there's something new to learn and appreciate.
I recently visited Japan - I find creative inspiration in every place I visit, and in Japan, pearls were on my mind. what a surprise!
We headed to Ise Shima where I stumbled upon the epic Women Divers of Shima, the Ama divers. The thought of diving for pearls in the deep ocean immediately sparked my curiosity!
This tradition of the Ama, or "sea women," has been around for over 2,000 years. With no oxygen tanks or formal training, these incredible women dive into the sea to gather treasures using only their bodies. They rely on a mix of experience and intuition to find those underwater riches. Ama divers traditionally wear white… white for pearls and purity, as well as a way to wield off sharks.
The courage of these Ama women is truly something to admire. duty and superstition mark the Ama world. They trust their bodies to take them on these daring missions. Without any advanced gear, they strap on 5kg weights and dive straight down, holding their breath for about 50 seconds to collect abalone, horned turbans, and other mollusks. They move through dense seaweed and use rocks and chisels to free these from the coral. It's a tough and risky job, especially with sea lions and sharks around! they create small shrines near their diving sights to thank the gods for their safe return.
In Japan, the Ama, or "sea women," are living symbols of resilience , tradition, and a true sisterhood. These women dive into the ocean with nothing but their breath, embodying strength and independence.
Their tradition is rooted in practicality, as women often possess higher body fat than men, providing better resistance to cold water. The Ama are more than skilled divers; they are stewards of the sea, practicing sustainable harvesting to honor and preserve the ocean’s bounty.
Their legacy is a rare and vital part of Japanese culture, passed down through generations. This celebration of feminine strength is truly inspiring.
I will carry their story with me, as I dream up new designs - stay tuned!
big love and thanks
